The number of marriages in Northern Ireland last year (2009) dropped by 579 from the previous year 

Did you ever wonder how many people get married every year in Northern Ireland?  Well here is some interesting statistics for you to browse.  These statistics can be found on the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) website.  

How many marriages were registered in Northern Ireland in 2009? 

The number of marriages registered in Northern Ireland in 2009 was 7,931, a decrease on the8,510 marriages registered in 2008. 

What is the most popular season for getting married?  

Summer is the most popular time of year to get married. Almost 41% of all marriages took place in the third quarter of 2009 (July-September), whilst only 10% of marriages took place in the first quarter (January-March) 

What was the most popular day & month for couples to get married in 2009?

August was also the most popular month to get married last year (2009) with 1,200 marriages taking place in August and Saturday, 22 August 2009 was the most popular day with 115 marriages.    Also if we look back at 2008 we can see that August was also the most popular month that year to get married were over 1400 marriages took place and the most popular day that year was 8th August 2008.  Maybe this was because it would be an easy date to remember 08/08/08 

What was the average age of couples getting married? 

The average age at marriage for all brides in 2009 was 31 and the average age for all grooms in 2009 was 33.  In addition first time brides and first time grooms are now on average five years older than their counterparts twenty years ago. 

What types of marriage ceremonies took place in 2009? 

Of the 7,931 marriages registered in 2009, 5,601 (71%) were religious marriages and the remaining 2,330 (29%) were civil marriages. 

Of the 5,601 religious marriages in 2009, 53% were Roman Catholic ceremonies; 19% Presbyterian (including Free Presbyterian), 14% Church of Ireland, 4% Methodist and 11% ‘Other denominations’.
